Subsidies for solar panels, home batteries and charging points in the Netherlands in 2026

Are you considering investing in solar panels, a home battery or a charging point?

Various financial benefits are available in the Netherlands that can make investment in sustainable energy more attractive. Which scheme applies depends, among other things, on the technology, use of the installation and whether you invest as a private individual or business.

Solar panels: 0% VAT for homes

One of the main financial benefits for private homeowners is the 0% VAT rate on solar panels.

Under certain conditions, the supply and installation of solar panels on or at a home qualify for the 0% VAT rate. As a private homeowner, you therefore often pay no VAT on the solar panels and their installation.

However, the 0% rate does not automatically apply to every component of a solar panel system.

Certain additional work or equipment may fall under the regular VAT rate. A separate replacement of an inverter, for example, does not automatically qualify for the 0% rate when supplied separately.

Can you reclaim VAT on a home battery?

The VAT rules for home batteries are more complex.

Under certain conditions, private individuals can reclaim VAT on the purchase and installation of a home battery. However, you cannot simply buy a home battery and automatically reclaim 21% VAT.

The Tax Administration sets specific conditions for this scheme.

The battery must be used for buying and selling electricity. In addition, the battery must have an Energy Management System (EMS) that enables electricity trading. A dynamic energy contract is also required.

In short: the VAT treatment of a home battery is linked to how the battery is used and controlled.

What about VAT on feeding back and trading electricity?

When you reclaim VAT on a home battery because you buy and sell electricity, there are also tax obligations you need to consider.

Is the battery also used privately? Private use can then also play a role in the VAT settlement. How this works in practice depends on actual use and the applicable VAT rules.

Important to know
VAT recovery can make a home battery more financially attractive, but it is not a simple 21% discount on the purchase price.

It is important to assess the full VAT position in advance. This is especially true when you combine a home battery with solar panels, a dynamic energy contract and smart energy management.

Is there a subsidy for a home battery in the Netherlands?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions about home batteries.

For private homeowners, there is currently no general national purchase subsidy for home batteries comparable to certain subsidy schemes for other sustainable technologies.

However, that does not mean there are no financial options at all.

Municipalities and other local authorities may offer their own subsidies or incentive schemes for sustainability. These schemes vary by municipality and may change over time.

Depending on your place of residence or business location, there may be schemes for, for example:

  • energy savings;
  • sustainable energy;
  • charging infrastructure;
  • sustainability of buildings;
  • energy storage;
  • local energy projects.

Provinces may also have their own incentive schemes.

It is therefore wise to always check which local and regional subsidies apply to your situation before investing.

Which financial scheme suits your situation?

There is no universal answer to the question of which subsidy or tax scheme you can use.

Please note: the table above is a general indication. The exact conditions and availability of schemes may change.

Subsidies, VAT rules and tax benefits can become complicated, especially when you combine multiple energy technologies.

At Novectra, we look not only at the installation itself, but at the total energy system. We can advise you on solar panels, battery storage, charging infrastructure and energy management, and which financial schemes may be relevant for your situation.

Disclaimer: This article contains general information on Dutch subsidies, tax benefits and VAT rules in 2026. Whether a scheme applies to you depends on your personal situation, the technical specifications of the installation and current regulations. Schemes, conditions and available budgets may change.
