For PLUS supermarket in Koewacht, we realised a large-scale installation of 320 solar panels. This allows the supermarket to make optimal use of the available roof area for generating sustainable energy.

320 solar panels on the roof of PLUS Koewacht
In early 2024, PLUS Koewacht took a concrete step towards more sustainable operations. Together with installation partner NOVECTRA, 320 solar panels were installed on the roof of the supermarket.
With solar panels, the supermarket can generate a large share of its electricity consumption sustainably on site. That is particularly interesting for retail businesses with a large roof area and a relatively high electricity demand. A supermarket roof offers a major opportunity: there is often plenty of available space that can be used to generate solar energy without requiring additional land.
The installation in Koewacht was part of a much larger sustainability initiative in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. In total, 2,100 solar panels were installed on five PLUS and Coop supermarkets, enabling the stores to reduce their dependence on conventional energy and become more energy-efficient.
Commercial solar panels: sustainable and practical
For businesses, sustainability is not only about ambitions, but above all about solutions that work in day-to-day practice. A solar panel installation must therefore fit the building, energy consumption and operations.
At PLUS Koewacht, these principles formed the basis for the project. The 320 solar panels were integrated into the existing roof structure, allowing the supermarket to continue its business activities.

2,100 solar panels at five supermarkets in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen
The installation at PLUS Koewacht did not stand alone. The project was part of a broader sustainability programme at five PLUS and Coop supermarkets in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.
Across these locations, a total of 2,100 solar panels were installed.
A project of this scale requires a consistent approach, but at the same time customisation for each location. After all, every supermarket has a different roof, a different technical infrastructure and specific on-site conditions.
Solar panels for businesses: make use of what is already there
The sustainability of PLUS Koewacht shows the role that existing commercial buildings can play in the energy transition.
With solar panels on commercial roofs, available space can be utilised without requiring additional land. For supermarkets, distribution centres, industrial halls and other commercial buildings with a large roof area, this can be an interesting step towards a more sustainable energy supply.
At the same time, commercial solar energy requires a solution that looks beyond the number of panels alone. Available grid capacity, energy consumption, the electrical installation and future energy needs all play a role.
