Dutch net metering scheme for solar panel electricity generation and household energy use

The end of the net metering scheme in 2027

How NOVECTRA helps you get the most out of your solar energy

The Dutch net metering scheme for solar panels ends on 1 January 2027. For households and businesses with solar panels, this is an important change. But that does not mean solar energy becomes less valuable.

It mainly means that the way you use the energy you generate becomes increasingly important.

Until 2026, the net metering scheme makes it possible to offset the electricity you feed back into the electricity grid with the electricity you draw at another time. From 2027, that will no longer be possible.

What can you do?
At NOVECTRA, we believe the solution is not simply to install even more solar panels. The future lies in a smart and integrated energy system in which you generate, use, store and manage your own energy as efficiently as possible.

From solar panels and home batteries to EV charging, electric heating, PVT systems and electrical installations: NOVECTRA helps you prepare your home or business for the energy landscape after 2027.

What happens when the net metering scheme ends in 2027?

From 1 January 2027, you will no longer be able to offset the electricity your solar panels generate one-to-one with the electricity you draw from the electricity grid at another time.

You can still feed surplus electricity back into the electricity grid. Your energy supplier pays you a feed-in tariff for this. However, the financial benefit of feeding back is generally lower than the value of electricity you use directly yourself. Until 2030, the minimum feed-in tariff is set at 50% of the basic supply rate, excluding taxes.

This creates a clear incentive:

Use as much of your own solar energy as possible instead of feeding it back into the electricity grid.

And that is precisely where smart energy solutions can make the difference.

From generating energy to managing energy smartly

Your solar panels typically produce the most electricity around midday, while your household or business may consume a lot of energy in the morning and evening.

Without the net metering scheme, this mismatch becomes more important.

Suppose your solar panels generate 10 kWh during the day, while you only use 3 kWh directly at that moment. The remaining 7 kWh you feed back into the electricity grid.

After 2027, you will receive a separate feed-in tariff for this exported electricity. This electricity can no longer be offset against your consumption at a later time.

The solution? Combine different technologies and build an integrated energy system.

The NOVECTRA solution:

Instead of viewing solar panels, home batteries, charging stations and heating systems as separate products, NOVECTRA looks at how these technologies can work together.

The goal is simple:

  • Generate more of your own energy
  • Use more of your own energy directly
  • Store surplus energy
  • Limit unnecessary draw from the electricity grid

NOVECTRA: one partner for your complete energy solution

At NOVECTRA, we bring different technologies together to help households and businesses get more value from their own sustainable energy.

Our solutions include:

Prepare for the end of net metering in 2027

Before you invest in additional solar panels, a home battery, charging station, electric heating, Smart Energy Management (EMS) or another technology, it is important to first map out your complete energy situation.

Consider the following:

  • Your current electricity consumption
  • Your daily consumption pattern
  • Your existing solar panel installation
  • Your future energy needs
  • Your current heating system
  • Your use of an electric car
  • The available space on your roof
  • Your electrical installation
  • Your plans for further electrification

The best solution is ultimately the one that fits how you actually use energy.

Frequently asked questions

The Dutch net metering scheme ends on 1 January 2027. From that date, you will no longer be able to offset the electricity you feed back into the electricity grid with electricity you draw at another time.

Your solar panels will continue to generate electricity as usual. You can use this electricity directly yourself or feed a surplus back into the electricity grid against a feed-in tariff.

When the net metering scheme ends, electricity that you use directly yourself can be financially more attractive than electricity you feed back into the electricity grid. By increasing your own consumption, you can therefore get more value from your solar panels.

A home battery can store surplus solar energy and make it available at a later time, for example in the evening. Whether a home battery is financially attractive depends on your personal energy consumption, the output of your solar panels, your energy contract and the configuration of your energy system.

Yes. A charging station can be integrated into your energy system so that you can charge your electric car as much as possible with your own generated solar energy.

Yes. NOVECTRA offers various sustainable energy solutions, including solar panels, home batteries, EV charging, electric heating, PVT panels, electrical installations and sedum roofs.

Yes. Instead of looking at each technology separately, NOVECTRA can assess how different solutions can work together. This takes into account the energy consumption of the home or business, the existing installation and future energy needs.
